Job Description
This faculty leader will play a central role in developing a nationally recognized scientific program focused on the impact of health care utilization on rural health outcomes, leveraging an established Medicare claims dataset at UT Tyler (>25 million beneficiaries, 5 years of follow[1]up, including Part D data). The program also has access to electronic health record data from UT Health East Texas (>500,000 patients), offering unique opportunities for integration of claims and clinical data. The program has plans to expand and include other, publicly available datasets.
The University of Texas at Tyler School of Medicine seeks an accomplished quantitative scientist (PhD required in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Health Services Research, or related field) to join the Department of Medicine as a key faculty member in the UT Tyler Rural Health Outcomes Program.
The successful candidate will direct analytic projects, mentor trainees across all levels (medical students, residents, fellows, junior faculty), and work collaboratively with faculty across UT Tyler and partnering institutions to expand the reach and impact of rural health research. A full-time analyst will report directly to this position, providing dedicated support for data management and advanced analytics.
Key Responsibilities
Program Development & Leadership
- Lead the design, development, and growth of the UT Tyler Rural Health Outcomes Program, with a focus on healthcare utilization and rural health disparities.
- Establish a pipeline of scholarly projects using Medicare claims, UTHET EHR data, and other administrative databases.
- Develop collaborations within UT Tyler School of Medicine, across UT System, and with external academic partners.
- Position the program for extramural funding (NIH, AHRQ, PCORI, foundations).
- Conduct high-impact research using Medicare claims and EHR data to understand drivers of health outcomes in rural populations.
- Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at national and international conferences.
- Serve as PI or Co-I on research grants related to health services research, rural health, or outcomes research.
- Mentor medical students, residents, and fellows in research methods and scholarly projects.
- Provide structured guidance and support for junior faculty career development.
- Contribute to the Department's educational mission by teaching epidemiology, biostatistics, and health services research concepts relevant to rural health.
- Supervise a full-time analyst supporting the Rural Health Outcomes Program.
- Ensure high standards of analytic quality, reproducibility, and scientific rigor.
- Guide integration of Medicare claims and UTHET EHR data into a unified research platform.
- Other duties as assigned.
- PhD in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Health Services Research, Population Health, or related quantitative discipline.
- Strong record of peer-reviewed publications and evidence of ability to secure extramural funding.
- Experience in mentorship of trainees and junior faculty.
- Excellent quantitative and analytic skills, including advanced methods in causal inference, longitudinal data analysis, pharmacoepidemiology, or related techniques.
- Commitment to advancing rural health equity and outcomes research.
- Demonstrated expertise in analysis of large administrative or claims datasets (Medicare or equivalent strongly preferred).
- Excellent organizational skills, flexibility, and the ability to multi-task.
- Capable of interacting with both staff and faculty, at all levels, is crucial to this role.
- The ability to work resourcefully and efficiently in terms of time management, with a high level of professionalism, confidentiality, and autonomy, is also imperative.
- Access to >25 million Medicare beneficiaries with 5 years of follow-up (Parts A, B, and D).
- Access to >500,000 patients' EHR data from UT Health East Texas.
