Overview

The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina, invites applicants for a nine-month, tenure-track position in the Department of Health and Human Performance (HHP), at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning Fall 2024. Located in beautiful and historic Charleston, South Carolina, The Citadel is a fully accredited, public, comprehensive, co-educational college with a student body of about 2,300 undergraduate students who make up the South Carolina Corps of Cadets and another 1,000 students who attend The Citadel Graduate College, a civilian evening and online program that offers graduate and professional degrees as well as undergraduate programs. For the past thirteen years, U.S. News and World Report has ranked The Citadel as the top public college in the South among master’s-granting institutions.

One of seven departments in the Swain Family School of Science and Mathematics, the Department of Health and Human Performance (HHP) offers B.S. in Exercise Science as a day program to the South Carolina Corps of Cadets, the M.S. in Health and Human Performance with concentration in Coaching and Athletic Performance as an evening graduate program, and the B.S. in Strength and Conditioning as an online degree completion program. Additionally, the department offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in both Physical education and Sport Management. The Citadel supports faculty research, professional development, and travel through internal funding. Salary and fringe benefits are competitive.

Position Responsibilities

  • Teaching responsibilities at the undergraduate (B.S.) and graduate (M.S.) levels in courses related to strength and conditioning, sport coaching, exercise science, and health/wellness. Teaching responsibilities will be carried out in multiple delivery formats, including 100% online, face-to-face, hybrid, and other emerging delivery formats.
  • The position also entails Program Coordinator responsibilities for two academic programs, which include an online undergraduate (B.S.) degree completion program in Strength and Conditioning and a graduate (M.S.) Concentration in Coaching and Athletic Performance. Primary responsibilities include constructing program reports on an annual basis, determining course offerings, ensuring course materials remain current with industry standards, reviewing online courses for quality control, and ensuring curricula align with accreditation standards established by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). The Program Coordinator will also oversee field experiences for each program, including practicum and internship experiences. Lastly, the Program Coordinator will also collaborate with the Office of Communications and Marketing (OCM) and The Citadel Graduate College (CGC) to enhance student enrollment and retention efforts for each program.
  • The candidate is expected to achieve and maintain scholarly productivity consistent with departmental and college-wide policy for tenure and promotion. Service will include advising and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, serving on departmental, school, and/or college-wide committees, and assisting with the development of industry partnerships and internship sites.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • An earned doctorate from an accredited institution in Exercise Science, Strength and Conditioning, or a closely related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior teaching experience in online and face-to-face modalities and excellence commensurate with the position rank being sought; evidence of mentoring and engaging undergraduate in research; a record of scholarly publications commensurate with the position rank being sought; experience developing a new course and curriculum. National Strength and Conditioning Association Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS). Experience with NSCA/CASCE accreditation highly desired.
