James Madison University (JMU) invites applications for the position of Department Head for Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) in the College of Health and Behavioral Studies (CHBS). The position is a 12-month, tenure-track faculty appointment at the Associate/Full Professor rank with consideration of tenure upon appointment. The Department Head reports to the Dean of the College of Health and Behavioral Studies, in which the Communication Sciences and Disorders department is one of eight academic units. The desired start date is July 1, 2022.
The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders is a thriving and collegial academic unit with 18 full-time faculty and six part-time faculty with additional adjunct and clinical educators as needed. The department serves an average of 350 undergraduate majors and 125 graduate students across multiple degree-granting academic programs: Undergraduate Program (B.A. or B.S.), Master’s Program in Speech-Language Pathology (offering both residential and online programs), Doctor of Audiology Program, Dual Doctor of Audiology and Doctor of Philosophy Program and Doctor of Philosophy Program. The Clinical Doctorate in Audiology (Au.D.) and the M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology programs are accredited by the Council for Academic Accreditation (CAA) through the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association. We have a well-established and growing research doctorate (Ph.D). The program has an in-house, state-of-the-art clinic and team of dedicated clinical educators with rich community outreach to support evidence-based practice science.

Duties and Responsibilities
The Department Head is responsible for working with faculty to set a strategic direction for the department, as well as administering and integrating all aspects of the department to promote excellence on a national and international level.
Successful candidates will demonstrate
(1) a record of outstanding leadership, creative vision, and budget management;
(2) excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both within the unit (e.g., promoting an inclusive and collaborative environment) and more broadly with other academic unit heads, administrators, campus partners and external stakeholders;
(3) experience supporting and advancing efforts related to interprofessional and interdisciplinary education and those related to diversity, equity and inclusion;
(4) an integrated record of teaching, scholarship and service, including achievements in external funding and research productivity, and service to the discipline and/or professional associations; and
(5) a Ph.D. with a major emphasis in an area related to speech-language pathology, audiology and/or speech, hearing, or language science. Preference will be given to candidates who exhibit evidence of effectiveness in academic or professional leadership roles.
