The University of Maine at Augusta-Bangor campus invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Dental Health.  This is a nine-month, academic year appointment.  This position is primarily located on the Bangor Campus with routine in-state travel to UMA Centers and clinical rotation sites required.  The major duties of the position are teaching and advising students.  Teaching assignments may include didactic, preclinical, clinical and laboratory teaching in Dental Assisting and/or Expanded Functions Dental Assisting curriculum.  The successful candidate must be highly organized, detail-oriented, work well independently and as part of a team.  Participation in professional and institutional service and scholarly activity is also expected.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in health, education, or a related discipline
  • Certificate in dental assisting or a higher degree in the dental field
  • Dental Assisting National Board Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) or eligible with certification obtained prior to start date.
  • Maine licensed Radiographer, RDH or DMD/DDS in good standing or eligible for Maine licensure with licensure obtained prior to start date.
  • Experience working in four-handed dentistry
  • Three years of teaching experience at the post-secondary level.
  • Extensive travel is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in health, education, or a related discipline
  • Successful teaching experience using distance education modalities
  • A graduate of a CODA accredited Dental Assisting Program
  • A minimum of three years of experience working clinically in four-handed dentistry
  • Current knowledge of four-handed dentistry
  • EFDA licensed or eligible for EFDA licensure in Maine
  • Clinical practice experience as an Expanded Function Dental Assistant

Highly qualified applicants that meet the required educational requirements, but not the preferred educational requirement of holding a Master’s degree or higher may be offered a fixed-length position with the expectation of obtaining a Master’s degree within three years of hire date. The typical salary for a fixed-length academic year appointment falls in the mid-to-high 40s and is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
