Utah State University seeks a Department Head for the Department of Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education. The Department Head reports to the Dean of the Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services and contributes to executive management of the college. This is a 12-month administrative appointment. Successful candidates should have qualifications for tenure at the rank of Professor. Position begins July 2018.

Responsibilities:Major responsibilities as Department Head:

  1. Leadership for Academic Quality – Review program goals and develop strategic plans with faculty; provide leadership and coordination across instructional programs; coordinate faculty hiring; conduct annual performance reviews, manage personnel resources, and promote high performance standards for faculty and staff; and bring an inclusive approach to leadership and appreciation for the diverse disciplines and areas of study within the department.
  2. Leadership for Administrative Operations – Develop effective communication processes and be accessible to faculty and staff; involve faculty and staff in major department decisions; manage personnel, fiscal and space resources of the department in an effective and efficient manner that aligns with the department mission and goals; and attend to administrative details in a manner that fosters a positive atmosphere in the department.
  3. Leadership in Building the Reputation of the Department – Develop external grants and contracts to help achieve strategic goals; actively pursue development opportunities; promote national visibility for department programs; effectively advocate for the department both on and off campus; and recognize faculty, staff, and student accomplishments.
  4. Leadership in Fostering the Success of the College and the University – Advocate effectively for the college and university; positively communicate college and university policies and perspectives to faculty, staff, and students; contribute to the development of policies and programs that move the college and university forward; and maintain high standards of professional ethics.
  5. Excellence in Research and Teaching – Contribute effectively to the teaching mission of the university as an instructor and mentor in learning opportunities in and out of the classroom; maintain a program of research or scholarship that is consistently productive, self-sustaining, and nationally recognized for excellence; with relative emphasis on teaching versus research negotiable based on individual strengths and interests.

Dept/College Highlights:The Department of Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education in the Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services includes more than 40 research and clinical faculty, academic instructors, and student advisors in the divisions of Speech-Language Pathology, Audiology, and Deaf Education. The department head’s work is supported by three division chairs and a strong cadre of administrative staff. The department offers campus and online bachelor’s degrees in communicative disorders, campus and outreach master’s degrees in speech-language pathology and deaf education, a clinical doctorate in Audiology. The department offers a non-clinical master’s degree and strands in audiology and speech-language pathology in the interdisciplinary PhD program in Disability Disciplines. The department is also part of the interdisciplinary PhD program in Neuroscience. The department includes full-service speech and hearing clinics that will be housed in the new Sorenson Center for Clinical Excellence, an American Sign Language lab, and a Listening and Spoken Language program (Sound Beginnings) for children who are deaf or hard of hearing. These serve as practicum sites for graduate training for all three divisions. Research faculty benefit from state-of-the-art facilities with attractive research start-up, college-level grant management and statistical support, and competitive internal university research funding.

Utah State University is in Logan, a small city located in a county of approximately 120,000 inhabitants, 80 miles north of Salt Lake City. It is situated within the scenic high mountains of Cache Valley. Logan is a family-oriented community with a reasonable cost of living. Outdoor activities include excellent hiking, biking, skiing, and water sports. Regional locations of interest include Yellowstone National Park and Jackson Hole, Wyoming to the north and the red rock country of Arches National Park and Moab to the south.

Qualifications:Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Earned doctorate in communication sciences and disorders or closely related area
  • Experience as a department head, program director, or similar leadership position
  • Ability to create positive relations and work successfully with administrators, faculty, staff, and students
  • Record of research, teaching, and service that would merit appointment as a Professor
  • Compelling vision for moving the department forward based on its strengths and opportunities

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience working in an academic unit that includes accredited programs, varied disciplines, PhD programs, and distance education
  • Experience managing higher education operating budgets or large grant budgets
  • Research and instructional expertise that complement existing faculty strengths
  • General knowledge of deaf education, with a philosophical view that supports all modes of communication
  • Graduate degree in speech-language pathology or audiology
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence (ASHA) in Speech-Language Pathology or Audiology

ADA Comm Requirements – Comprehension:
Comprehension and expression of a level to routinely draft narrative information such as case histories, compose routine correspondence on own initiative, make interview notes. May involved a large volume of such composition.

ADA Travel Requirements:
Minimal travel required – ability to travel infrequently (i.e., annually) for activities such as developmental sessions at a centralized training center.
